Snacking Trends for the Big Game

CPG Trend Report: Top Big Game Party Foods

Data from Catalina’s Shopper Intelligence Platform reveals a clear shift in at-home consumer snacking habits for the big game: Pepperoni sales are soaring, spiking 26%, while Chicken Wings are taking a time out with purchases plummeting 16% for the period of Jan. 11 to Jan. 28, 2025, compared to Sept. 5 to Sept. 22, 2024.

“Our analysis shows shifting purchase patterns for at-home entertaining on big game days,” said Adam Van Beck, Catalina’s SVP of Omnichannel Solutions. “By comparing the sales volume of popular buffet items during the regular football season versus the playoffs, our data experts found shoppers are upping their game in the post-season.”

Healthy Options Join the Lineup
Grocery shoppers are also adding healthier options to their game-day spreads, including Guacamole (+9%), as they continue to watch their waistlines in the New Year. They are also swapping out full-calorie Flavored Colas (-12%) for Flavored Diet Sodas (+16) and choosing portion control with Premixed Cocktails (+8).

The Price of a Perfect Party
Catalina’s analysis also reveals that shoppers continue to prioritize value. Rising prices on Better for You Chips, up 12% YOY, correlate with a 15% drop in volume during the post-season. Similarly, the decline in sales of both Flavored Colas and Chicken Wings may be attributed to price increases of 13% and 17%, respectively.
